Schablonen in Aktion [Templates in Action]is a series of site-specific interventions using stucco work. The title refers to a central gesture in stucco production: drawing the template across a table where the material accumulates and is shaped into form.
In German, the word Strich refers both to the brushstroke in painting and to the linear mark produced by a stucco template. While the stroke in painting discours is often celebrated as a sign of individual expression, here it becomes a technical gesture—precise, repeatable, anonymous. The stroke remains, but it no longer belongs to the hand; it emerges from the template, which takes on the role of artistic agent. Expression is shifted from gesture to tool, from movement to form. The template itself embodies both craftsmanship and design sensibility, and occupies a central place in the aesthetic repertoire of the stucco artisan.
Each template responds to the architectural conditions and context of the space in which the work is made. Since all stucco elements are produced on site, their forms reflect the specific spatial languages —mouldings, proportions, lines, surfaces—of their surroundings.
Within the exhibition space, the stucco pieces may be read as artworks, but also as traces of a performative act. They refer back to their own making and gesture toward the ways in which objects are produced, perceived, and situated within aesthetic and economic frameworks.
Schablonen in Aktion was developed in collaboration with architect and stucco artisan Theodor Dathe and artist Paul Niedermayer.
