Unnötige Bewegungen [Unnecessary Movements] is a photographic series that emerged from an engagement with the visibility of labor and value production. The term originates in Scientific Management and refers to movements during production that do not generate value. In the early twentieth century, motion studies traced workers’ movements through long exposure photography, attaching lights to the body in order to optimize production processes.
Using sparklers, I revisit this method in spaces of reproductive labour such as my bed, balcony, or a jetty in Brandenburg.
